HOEOCA Rallies form the basis of our cruising programme and are organised by Alistair Kingham - Rear Commodore Cruising - who can be contacted by email: firstname.lastname@example.org
HOEOCA organises three "official" rallies each year and these form the focus for our cruising sailing activity. The purpose of these is to give everyone an opportunity to have a go at sailing whatever their level of experience.
- Spring Rallies to beautiful destinations including France, the Channel Islands and the West Country
- In September our annual "Hot-Hot-Hot" trips take us to the Mediterranean
- Autumn Rally in November on the Solent
- Enjoy sociable sailing at its finest!.
In May or early June we try to use the longer days to venture across to France, the Channel Islands or the West Country for a 5 - 7 day trip. These trips enable members to experience a channel crossing, collect some night hours and record a 60 mile passage for further RYA qualifications.
We use a mix of owners and chartered boats and assemble crews balanced in accordance with their experience. Typically there are 50 - 60 people attending. Where possible, we cruise in the company of at least one other boat and plan to meet up overnight. The highpoint of the rally is an organised dinner together at our destination.
Our 4 day rally in November usually takes place in the Solent and is more about practising skills and socialising than accumulating miles. The weather at that time of year can be surprisingly good and the waters are much emptier.
The format is similar to the Spring Rally, although slightly less in numbers. We again use a mix of owners and chartered boats and our aim is to cruise in company. The rally dinner, normally held in one of the excellent yacht clubs in the area, again provides the main event and is centred on a fancy dress theme.
We have now been on 17 trips to warmer climes in the late summer / early autumn. These longer (7 - 10 day) trips allow us to operate as our own mini flotilla, typically with 4 or 5 boats and a planned route, allowing us to explore a new cruising area.
To date we have visited Croatia, Sardinia/Corsica, Majorca, Malta, Elba, Greece and Turkey.
Shared Cost Cruising
From time to time, boat owners make their boats available for a cruise. be it a weekend, mid week or week long opportunity. The club advertises such opportunities and invites memebers to then liase direct with the owner(s) concerned.
On these occasions, no charge is made by the owner. All costs of the specific voyage (such as berthing, fuel and food) would be equally shared by those on board and the club way of saying thank you for the hopspitality extended would normally be to ensure that the owner is treated to a pie and a pint (or several) at the very least!
The club has purchased an Adriatic, Dutch and Greek Pilot which members are welcome to borrow from Judy Lambourne.
We also usually have a UK Almanac which Rear Commodore Cruising has charge of. Again, this can be borrowed if required.
