Congratulations to all those who've taken part and many thanks for all the ideas in pulling the championship together. We hope you've have had fun and that you've learnt stuff that's new to you - Keith thinks he managed to include the full set of collision regulations “lights and marks” in addition to the fun facts.
Finally we'd like to say a big thanks to Keith and Judy for putting the quizzes together for us and to Keith and the owners of Sea Myth for offering their boats for the shared-cost weekend.
As we've all got at bit more time on our hands right now we're planning a lockdown quiz 'regatta' with six short, fun quizzes, just for HOEOCA members, courtesy of club members Keith Harding and Judy Lambourne with additional material from Mary Coles, David Gilchrist, Michael Skinner, Peter Smerdon and Stephanie Williams.
There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs. There's a choice of a new HOEOCA neck warmer, a First Aid book, a Sea Survival book or a limited edition R4tW baseball cap for the winner of each quiz. And there's a shared-cost weekend (to cover food, fuel, mooring fees etc) on board Reach4theWind and Sea Myth for the top six quizzers across the whole series. (Date to be decided once we can get back on the water safely.)
The overall winner will be recognized at this year’s annual awards, which are normally announced at the Laying Up Supper at the end of the year.
The scoring system is based on a sailing regatta with two discards allowed so if you've yet to submit an entry it's not too late and everyone still has everything to play for.
The overall regatta winner/winners will be the those with the lowest overall score based on four rounds. Once you've completed four rounds you can discard your least good score and you'll get a second discard on completing all six rounds.
So get quizzing...
The quiz is not closed book; you can ask family members, check your answers, look on Google, or hit the books, in fact it is hard to cheat.
You'll find the quiz sheets on a dedicated HOEOCA page on the Reach 4 the Wind website here, password HOEOCA2020. We're aiming to do two a month during the lockdown period.
So please, have fun, when ready, send your answers by emailing Keith with your completed answer sheet by the closing dates. As with all these things, the judge’s decision (Keith) will be final. The results of individual entries will not be made public. The winners will be contacted directly and announced in the next newsletter.
If you have a problem in downloading ether the quiz or answer sheets please contact Keith and he'll send you a copy. Finally if you'd like to create one or more of our lockdown quizes, or contribute a few questions, please contact either
