Advice on this and books will be given on first night (Cost may be up to £100).

What will I learn on this course?

You will learn the importance of and how to apply:

·         chartwork navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship.

·         nautical terms, ropework, anchorwork, safety at sea

·         international regulations for preventing collisions at sea

·         definition of position, course and speed

·         navigational charts and publications

·         navigational drawing instruments, compasses

·         position, tides and tidal streams

·         visual aids to navigation

·         meteorology, passage planning, navigation in restricted visibility, pilotage

·         responsibility for avoiding pollution and protecting the marine environment 

The RYA Cruising Scheme leads eventually to the Yachtmaster Offshore qualification that is an internationally recognised standard. The object of the course is to cover the theoretical knowledge required to plan and navigate around familiar waters by day with confidence, accuracy and safety.  The course forms part of the RYA Cruising Scheme and is suitable for both sail and powerboat users. No prior knowledge is required but some practical experience is desirable, ideally this course fits between the Competent Crew and Day Skipper Practical Courses. http://www.ryatraining.org/  (for more information)

What teaching/learning methods will be used?

·         Lectures

·         Practical exercises in the classroom

·         Homework exercises.

·         A CD Rom dealing with Electronic Navigation forms part of every learners Course Pack

What examination/accreditation is available?

The final assessment is based on pre-set RYA test papers.

The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Certificate will be awarded on satisfactory completion of the course.

Will I need special equipment/materials/clothing/books?

In addition to the course fees, Navigation Equipment costing £24 is required to complete the Chartwork. The books used are the same as those used on the Yachtmaster Course. Advice will be given on the first night, bring any books and equipment you have.

What can I progress on to when I have completed this course?

The next steps are the Day Skipper Practical Course followed by the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory Course.
